As a resident of Hackney E5 I've got to know and love my local area. I've lived in the Borough for nearly 8 years now and made it my home and place of work as a local plumber.
When I started my business as a local plumber in London I soon realised that getting from job to job was going to be a challenge. Not only was there the expense of leasing a vehicle but also the cost of fuel, the traffic, parking, and the possibility of parking tickets.
In addition to this, some of the streets on my patch in Hackney have become ULEV (Ultra low Emissions Vehicles) streets. This means some streets are restricted to walking, cycling and low emission vehicles during peak hours. This is great news for the environment but tricky if you're a local plumber trying to get around the streets of London.
So with all this in mind, I decided to change tact and use a road bike to get from A to B. It was cheap to run, great for the environment and got me to a job quicker than a van. Plus there were no problems with finding a parking space or the inconvenience of asking the customer for a parking voucher. This was the stress-free choice and I've gained a knowledge of the streets equal to any Uber driver! I'm truly a local plumber - from Leyton to Stokey and Hoxton to Hackney Wick.
I really haven't looked back, I cycle in all weathers and arrive on time to the customer. I bring my tools with me in my yellow and black Stanley backpack (for anyone interested, it's the Stanley Fatmax Quick Access Backpack). This holds all the tools I need for the job and fits neatly into my bike carrier.
This change in lifestyle has had the added benefit of keeping me fit and stress-free which is a real bonus when living in a city.
